The Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering Potsdam-Bornim is a European center of agricultural engineering research at the nexus between biological and technical systems. Our research targets a knowledge-based bioeconomy. We are developing highly innovative and efficient technologies for the use of natural resources in agricultural production systems - from basic research to application.
Climate change and the incipient changes in the structure of agriculture represent particular challenges for agricultural engineering research.
ATB research activities are of interdisciplinary nature and follow a systems approach covering the entire spectrum from primary production and consumption of food, feed and non food biomass including technology assessment. In particular, the application of ICT, robotics and automation is a cross cutting approach at ATB for future sustainable farming systems.
ATB has multi-disciplinary research teams with currently around 260 staff members, 70 of them scientists and PhD students and counts with a budget of over 17 million € (2014, including third party funds). In 2014 scientists published over 90 peer reviewed papers in international journals. The Institute's research work addresses topical scientific questions and contributes to the call for practical guidance and support in the domains of politics, industry, agriculture and horticulture. ATB owns well equipped modern infrastructures, including experimental fields, highly specialized laboratories and major equipment such as pilot plants. Intensive collaboration with universities, other non-university research institutions and enterprises on national and EU/international level contributes largely to elaborate solutions for the agricultural and food industry.
